Italiano — the preterite perfect (trapassato remoto)
The trapassato remoto (ebbi/fui + past participle) marks an action finished just before another event told in the passato remoto. It appears almost only in subordinate clauses introduced by appena, dopo che or quando, and belongs to literary narration.
How it works
Form it with the passato remoto of avere or essere plus the past participle, and place it after a temporal conjunction: «Appena ebbe finito di parlare, tutti applaudirono», «Dopo che fummo usciti, la porta si chiuse». The main clause then stands in the passato remoto.
Conjugation
| Person | avere + participle (parlare) | essere + participle (partire) |
|---|---|---|
| io | ebbi parlato | fui partito |
| tu | avesti parlato | fosti partito |
| lui/lei | ebbe parlato | fu partito |
| noi | avemmo parlato | fummo partiti |
| voi | aveste parlato | foste partiti |
| loro | ebbero parlato | furono partiti |
Good to know
Use it only when the main verb is in the passato remoto, never with the passato prossimo. In today's spoken Italian it has virtually disappeared: outside literature you would simply say «Appena ha finito, sono usciti». Choose the auxiliary avere or essere exactly as in the other compound tenses.
