Deutsch — Fractions and arithmetic
In German, fractions such as ein Drittel or anderthalb, decimals written with a comma (drei Komma fünf), and calculations read aloud with plus, minus, mal and geteilt durch all follow clear, regular patterns.
How it works
Fractions add -tel to the number (ein Drittel, ein Viertel) and -stel from twenty upward (ein Zwanzigstel); the numerator stays an ordinary number: zwei Drittel. Special forms are ein halb (½) and anderthalb (1½). Decimals use a comma: 3,5 is read drei Komma fünf. Operations are read with plus, minus, mal and geteilt durch, and the result is introduced by ist: drei plus vier ist sieben. A percentage is Prozent: zwanzig Prozent.
Examples
| Example | German | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ½ | ein halb | one half |
| ⅓ | ein Drittel | one third |
| ⅔ | zwei Drittel | two thirds |
| 1½ | anderthalb / eineinhalb | one and a half |
| 3,5 | drei Komma fünf | decimal (comma as separator) |
| 6 × 7 = 42 | sechs mal sieben ist zweiundvierzig | multiplication (times) |
| 8 ÷ 2 = 4 | acht geteilt durch zwei ist vier | division (divided by) |
| 20 % | zwanzig Prozent | percent |
Good to know
Watch the separators: German uses a comma for decimals and a point (or a space) for thousands, so 1.000,50 means one thousand and fifty hundredths — the reverse of English. Fraction words like Drittel are neuter, capitalized nouns (ein Drittel), whereas ein halb and anderthalb are not inflected.
