Deutsch — the würde form
German expresses politeness and hypothetical situations with würde + infinitive, e.g. Ich würde gern einen Kaffee trinken or Würdest du mir helfen? It stands in for the Konjunktiv II of most verbs.
1
How it works
✓ Rule
Take the Konjunktiv II of werden (ich würde, du würdest, er/sie/es würde, wir würden, ihr würdet, sie/Sie würden) and add the plain infinitive at the end of the clause: Ich würde das nicht machen. In questions the würde-form is fronted: Würden Sie bitte warten?

Examples
| Sentence | Meaning / use |
|---|---|
| Ich würde gern einen Kaffee trinken. | polite wish: I'd like to have a coffee. |
| Würdest du mir helfen? | polite request: would you help me? |
| Würden Sie bitte kurz warten? | formal request (Sie): would you please wait a moment? |
| An deiner Stelle würde ich zu Hause bleiben. | advice: in your place I'd stay home. |
| Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich mitkommen. | conditional: if I had time, I'd come along. |
| Das würde ich nie sagen. | hypothetical statement: I would never say that. |

⚠ Note
For a few common verbs the plain Konjunktiv II is preferred over würde: use ich hätte (not würde haben), ich wäre (not würde sein), and the modals ich könnte, müsste, sollte, wollte, dürfte. So say Ich hätte gern…, not Ich würde gern haben…
