Français — Expressing consequence

French links a cause to its result with connectors like donc, alors, c'est pourquoi and par conséquent, or with intensity patterns such as si/tellement... que and si bien que. In il pleuvait, donc nous sommes restés the second clause states what followed from the first.

How it works

✓ Rule

The linking word joins two independent clauses: donc and alors are the everyday choices (je pense, donc je suis), while c'est pourquoi, par conséquent and d'où introduce the result more formally (il a menti, c'est pourquoi je me méfie).

Good to know

⚠ Note

Do not confuse alors (consequence) with alors que (whereas / while, contrast): il dort, alors que je travaille means "he sleeps, whereas I work", not a result. Also note si means "so" only before an adjective or adverb (si beau qu'on s'arrête); before a verb use tellement (il travaille tellement qu'il est épuisé), never si travaille.
