Français — Stressed (tonic) pronouns
French has a separate set of stressed pronouns — moi, toi, lui, elle, nous, vous, eux, elles — used after prepositions and for emphasis, as in avec moi and C'est moi.
1
How it works
✓ Rule
Stressed pronouns stand alone, unlike subject pronouns (je, tu…). Use them after a preposition (avec moi, chez eux, pour elle), to emphasize the subject (Moi, je pars — Me, I'm leaving), in short answers without a verb (Qui veut ? — Moi !), after c'est (C'est lui), and in additions like Moi aussi and Lui non plus.
2
Forms and examples
| Subject → stressed | Example |
|---|---|
| je → moi | C'est moi. Viens avec moi. |
| tu → toi | C'est toi ? Après toi. |
| il → lui | C'est lui. Je pense à lui. |
| elle → elle | Chez elle. Pour elle. |
| nous → nous | Nous, nous restons. Entre nous. |
| vous → vous | Vous, vous partez ? Après vous. |
| ils → eux | Chez eux. Avec eux. |
| elles → elles | Elles, elles arrivent. Sans elles. |

Good to know
⚠ Note
Only four forms differ from the subject pronoun: je → moi, tu → toi, il → lui, ils → eux (elle, elles, nous, vous stay the same). Don't use a subject pronoun after a preposition: say avec moi, not "avec je"; C'est moi, not "C'est je".
