Français — Indirect object pronouns

The indirect object pronouns me, te, lui, nous, vous, leur replace a person introduced by à: Je téléphone à Marie → Je lui téléphone.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

Verbs like parler à, téléphoner à, donner à take an indirect object. The pronoun goes before the conjugated verb: Je parle à mes parents → Je leur parle; Il donne un cadeau à sa sœur → Il lui donne un cadeau. Unlike lui/leur, the forms me and te become m' and t' before a vowel: Il m'écrit.

Examples

The six indirect object pronouns
Pronoun Meaning Example
me (m') to me Il me parle.
te (t') to you (sg.) Je te téléphone ce soir.
lui to him / to her Je lui donne un livre.
nous to us Elle nous parle en français.
vous to you (pl./formal) Je vous téléphone demain.
leur to them Il leur donne des conseils.

Good to know

⚠ Note

lui and leur do not show gender: lui is both "to him" and "to her". Beware of verbs whose English or native equivalent takes a direct object but whose French version needs à — e.g. téléphoner à qqn, so Je lui téléphone, never «Je le téléphone». Conversely, verbs like regarder, écouter, attendre take a direct object (le, la, les), not an indirect one.
