Polski — negative pronouns
Polish negative words such as nikt, nic, nigdy, nigdzie, żaden always work together with a negated verb: nikt nie wie.
1
How it works
✓ Rule
Polish uses double negation: the negative pronoun and the verb are BOTH negated. The verb takes nie, so you say nikt nie wie ('nobody knows'), nic nie widzę ('I see nothing') and nigdzie nie idę ('I'm not going anywhere'). With żaden the noun is negated too: żaden student nie przyszedł.

Examples
| Word | Example sentence | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| nikt | Nikt nie wie. | Nobody knows. |
| nic | Nic nie widzę. | I see nothing. |
| nigdy | Nigdy nie kłamię. | I never lie. |
| nigdzie | Nigdzie nie idę. | I'm not going anywhere. |
| żaden | Żaden student nie przyszedł. | No student came. |
| żadnego | Nie mam żadnego pomysłu. | I have no idea at all. |

⚠ Note
Never drop the nie: 'nikt wie' is wrong; you must say nikt nie wie. Several negatives can stack in one clause and the verb stays negated only once: nikt nigdy nic nie powiedział ('nobody ever said anything').
