Deutsch — da-/wo- compounds
When a preposition refers to a thing rather than a person, German does not use "preposition + it/them" but merges the preposition with da(r)-: mit → damit, auf → darauf, von → davon. Questions about things use the parallel wo(r)- forms: worauf, womit. For persons, the normal preposition + pronoun stays: mit ihm, auf sie.
How it works
Attach da- to prepositions beginning with a consonant (damit, davon) and dar- before a vowel (darauf, daran, darin). The same rule gives the question words: wo- + consonant (womit, wovon), wor- + vowel (worauf, woran). So Ich denke daran / Woran denkst du? refers to a thing, while An ihn denke ich refers to a person.
Examples
| Preposition | Thing: da(r)- / wo(r)- | Person: prep + pronoun |
|---|---|---|
| mit | damit / womit | mit ihm |
| auf | darauf / worauf | auf sie |
| von | davon / wovon | von ihm |
| an | daran / woran | an ihn |
| über | darüber / worüber | über sie |
| für | dafür / wofür | für ihn |
| zu | dazu / wozu | zu ihr |
| nach | danach / wonach | nach ihm |
Good to know
The choice depends on the reference, not the noun's grammatical gender: for a thing say Ich warte darauf, never *Ich warte auf es. da-forms also point forward to a following dass-/zu-clause: Ich freue mich darauf, dich zu sehen. The prepositions ohne, gegen (for persons) and cases like seit do not form these compounds — check each verb's fixed preposition.
