Polski — Universal and totality words
Polish expresses "every / all / whole" with a small set of words that agree in gender and number: każdy, wszyscy/wszystkie, wszystko and cały. Choosing the right one depends on whether you mean each single item, all of them together, everything in general, or a whole undivided thing.
How it works
każdy picks out members one by one and is always singular: każdy dzień, każda osoba, każde dziecko. For "all together" use the plural: wszyscy for a group that includes men (masculine personal), wszystkie for everything else — wszyscy studenci przyszli but wszystkie książki. wszystko means "everything" as one abstract whole (wszystko jest gotowe), while cały means an undivided "whole/entire": cały dzień, cała noc, całe miasto.
Forms and uses
| Word (m / f / n) | Meaning and use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| każdy / każda / każde | "each, every" — singular, one member at a time | każdy dzień, każda osoba, każde dziecko |
| wszyscy | "everyone / all" — plural, group that includes men (masc. personal) | wszyscy studenci przyszli |
| wszystkie | "all" — plural, everything non-masculine-personal (things, women, animals) | wszystkie książki, wszystkie kobiety |
| wszystko | "everything" — neuter singular, one abstract whole | wszystko jest gotowe, wiem wszystko |
| cały / cała / całe | "whole, entire" — an undivided single thing seen in full | cały dzień, cała noc, całe miasto |
| wszystek / wszystka / wszystko | "all of" (a mass/uncountable) — dated, rare in modern speech | wszystek majątek, wszystka woda |
Good to know
Do not mix up singular cały with plural wszyscy/wszystkie: cały tydzień is "the whole (single) week", but wszystkie tygodnie is "all the weeks". Note also that modern Polish almost always replaces the old wszystek by cały for masses — say całe mleko, not wszystko mleko — and by wszystkie in the plural. Only cały / cała / całe is safe as the everyday word for "whole".
