Français — the pronouns y and en
The pronouns y and en let you avoid repeating a phrase already mentioned. y stands in for à + a thing or a place, while en stands in for de + a thing or a quantity.
1
How it works
✓ Rule
y replaces à + a thing or a place: Je vais à Paris → J'y vais; Je pense à mon travail → J'y pense. en replaces de + a thing, or a quantity: J'ai du pain → J'en ai; Je viens de Lyon → J'en viens; J'ai trois livres → J'en ai trois. Both pronouns go before the verb.

Examples
| Pronoun | Replaces | Example |

Good to know
⚠ Note
Keep the number when it expresses a quantity: J'en ai deux. For people, use à lui / à elle rather than y. When both pronouns meet, the order is en last: il y en a.
