Polski — the reflexive pronoun siebie
The reflexive pronoun siebie is a full pronoun that declines through the cases (się, siebie, sobie, sobą). It refers back to the subject and works for any person or number: myślę o sobie, kup sobie, weź ze sobą.
How it works
siebie has no nominative — the subject supplies it. It has one set of forms for all persons: the short się doubles as the accusative/genitive, siebie is its stressed variant, sobie is dative/locative, and sobą is instrumental: myślę o sobie ('I think about myself'), kup sobie coś ('buy yourself something'), weź ze sobą parasol ('take an umbrella with you').
Case forms
| Case | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Nominative | — | does not exist — supplied by the subject |
| Genitive | siebie (się) | nie znam siebie |
| Accusative | się / siebie | widzę siebie w lustrze |
| Dative | sobie | kup sobie coś |
| Instrumental | sobą | weź ze sobą parasol |
| Locative | sobie | myślę o sobie |
Good to know
Do not confuse the pronoun siebie with the verb particle się. In myję się ('I wash myself') się is a grammatical marker tied to the verb; in kupiłem to dla siebie ('I bought it for myself') siebie is a true pronoun you can stress, negate, or put after a preposition. After a preposition only the long forms appear: do siebie, przy sobie, przed sobą — never się.
