Deutsch — Purpose clauses

German expresses purpose with two structures: damit and um … zu + infinitive. The choice depends on whether the two clauses share the same subject.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

Use um … zu + Infinitiv when both clauses have the same subject: Ich lerne Deutsch, um in Berlin zu arbeiten. Use damit when the subjects differ: Ich spreche langsam, damit alle mich verstehen.

2

Examples

damit vs. um … zu
Use Example
Same subject → um … zu Ich spare Geld, um ein Auto zu kaufen.
Different subjects → damit Ich spare Geld, damit meine Kinder studieren können.
Separable verb: zu goes inside Er beeilt sich, um mitzukommen.
With a modal (verb at the end) Ich schreibe es auf, damit ich es nicht vergessen kann.
No subject, no conjugated verb Wir gehen früh los, um den Zug zu erreichen.
Same subject: damit works too Ich lerne viel, damit ich die Prüfung bestehe.
3

Good to know

⚠ Note

The um … zu clause never has its own subject or a conjugated verb. With separable verbs, zu sits inside: mitkommen → um mitzukommen. damit is always possible, even with the same subject; um … zu only works when the subject is shared.
