Italiano — Purpose clauses
To say why something is done, Italian chooses between two structures. If the subject changes, use perché/affinché + subjunctive: Te lo spiego affinché tu capisca. If both verbs share the same subject, use per/al fine di + infinitive: Studio per superare l'esame.
How it works
The choice depends on the subject. With two different subjects, use perché or affinché followed by the congiuntivo: Ti do la chiave affinché tu possa entrare. With one subject shared by both verbs, use per or al fine di followed by the infinitive: Esco presto per arrivare in orario.
Examples
| Structure | Example | Subject |
|---|---|---|
| perché + congiuntivo | Parlo piano perché tu capisca. | different |
| affinché + congiuntivo | Scrivo tutto affinché non si dimentichino i dettagli. | different |
| per + infinito | Mi alleno ogni giorno per migliorare. | same |
| al fine di + infinito | Hanno agito rapidamente al fine di evitare il peggio. | same |
| affinché + congiuntivo | Ti aiuto affinché tu possa finire in tempo. | different |
| per + infinito | Sono venuto per ringraziarti. | same |
Good to know
Do not use perché + subjunctive when both verbs share one subject: not Studio perché io superi l'esame but Studio per superare l'esame. Also note that perché means "because" with the indicative (Non esco perché piove) and "so that" only with the subjunctive; affinché and al fine di are more formal and never ambiguous.
