Deutsch — Temporal clauses

Temporal clauses answer "when?". A time conjunction such as als, wenn, während, bevor, nachdem, seit(dem), bis or sobald opens the clause and sends the conjugated verb to the very end.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

The time conjunction starts the subordinate clause and pushes the conjugated verb to the end: Als ich klein war, wohnte ich in Berlin. Wenn it comes first, the main clause follows with the verb in second position: Bevor du gehst, ruf mich an. Use als for a single event in the past and wenn for repeated or present/future events.

Examples

Time conjunctions with verb-final word order
Conjunction Meaning / use Example
als single event in the past Als ich klein war, wohnte ich in Berlin.
wenn repeated action or present/future "when/whenever" Wenn es regnet, bleibe ich zu Hause.
während two actions at the same time ("while") Während sie kochte, las er ein Buch.
bevor the main action happens before it ("before") Bevor du gehst, ruf mich an.
nachdem earlier action; requires a shift in tense ("after") Nachdem er gegessen hatte, ging er spazieren.
seit / seitdem starting point of an ongoing situation ("since") Seitdem ich hier wohne, bin ich glücklich.
bis end point / limit in time ("until") Warte, bis ich zurückkomme.
sobald immediately after ("as soon as") Sobald ich ankomme, schreibe ich dir.
3

Good to know

⚠ Note

After nachdem the two actions must be in different tenses: the nachdem-clause takes the Plusquamperfekt and the main clause the Präteritum or Perfekt — Nachdem er gegessen hatte, ging er spazieren, not …gegessen ist. Also keep als and wenn apart: als marks a one-time past event (Als ich ankam …), while wenn marks repetition or present/future (Immer wenn ich ankomme …).
