Deutsch — dass-clauses

dass introduces a subordinate clause after verbs of saying, thinking or feeling. The conjugated verb moves to the end.

How it works

After Ich glaube, Ich weiß, Ich denke, Ich hoffe, Ich finde… a comma and dass follow; the conjugated verb goes to the very end: Ich glaube, dass er müde ist (not …ist müde).

Examples

Main clause vs. dass-clause (verb to the end)
Main clause dass-clause Meaning
Er ist müde. Ich glaube, dass er müde ist. I think (that) he is tired.
Sie kommt später. Ich weiß, dass sie später kommt. I know (that) she is coming later.
Du hast recht. Ich denke, dass du recht hast. I think (that) you are right.
Es funktioniert. Ich hoffe, dass es funktioniert. I hope (that) it works.
Das stimmt. Ich finde, dass das stimmt. I find (that) that's true.

Good to know

⚠ Note

A dass-clause can itself be the subject and is then often anticipated by the correlate es: Es freut mich, dass du kommst (= Dass du kommst, freut mich). Note: dass (conjunction) is written with ss, unlike the article/pronoun das.
