Deutsch — Modal (means) clauses
German shows how or by what means something is done with subordinate clauses. The main connectors are indem, dadurch, dass, ohne dass / ohne … zu and (an)statt dass / statt … zu.
How it works
The means clause answers 'how?'. With indem the subordinate clause names the method: 'Sie spart Zeit, indem sie den Bus nimmt.' The correlative dadurch, dass works the same way: 'Er wurde besser, dadurch, dass er übte.' When both clauses share one subject, the infinitive forms ohne … zu and statt … zu replace ohne dass and anstatt dass: 'Er ging weg, ohne sich zu verabschieden.'
Examples
| Connector | Example | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Means or method; subjects may be the same |
| Emphatic correlative variant of indem |
| Circumstance that does not occur; different subjects |
| Same meaning as ohne dass, one shared subject |
| (an)statt dass | Anstatt dass du klagst, hilf mir. | One action replaces the expected one; different subjects |
| Instead of; one shared subject |
Good to know
Use the infinitive forms ohne … zu and statt … zu only when both clauses have the same subject; with different subjects you need ohne dass and (an)statt dass: 'Er ging weg, ohne dass ich es bemerkte.' Also, indem never means temporal 'while' — for that use während.
