Français — si-clauses (hypothesis)

French uses three fixed pairings of tenses to build conditional (si) sentences: real future, unreal present and unreal past.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

Real, possible future: si + présent → futur simple, e.g. Si j'ai le temps, je viendrai. Unreal present: si + imparfait → conditionnel présent, e.g. Si j'avais le temps, je viendrais. Unreal past: si + plus-que-parfait → conditionnel passé, e.g. Si j'avais eu le temps, je serais venu.

2

Examples

The three types of si-clause
Type Example
real Si j'ai le temps, je viendrai.
unreal present Si j'avais le temps, je voyagerais.
unreal past Si j'avais su, je serais venu.

Good to know

⚠ Note

Never put the futur or the conditionnel directly after si. The tense after si is présent, imparfait or plus-que-parfait — the futur simple, conditionnel présent or conditionnel passé goes only in the main (result) clause.
