Deutsch — Irreal wishes
An irreal wish expresses something you want but that is not (or was not) the case. German forms it with the Konjunktiv II, reinforced by the particles doch and/or nur: Wenn ich doch mehr Zeit hätte! or, without wenn, with the verb first: Hätte ich nur mehr Zeit!
How it works
Use the Konjunktiv II and add doch, nur or doch nur to signal the wish. A present wish uses the simple Konjunktiv II (hätte, wäre, könnte, or würde + infinitive): Wenn ich doch mehr Zeit hätte! A past wish (already unattainable) uses the past Konjunktiv II with hätte/wäre + past participle: Hätte ich das nur gewusst! With wenn the finite verb goes to the end; without wenn it comes first.
Examples
| Reference | Example | Verb form |
|---|---|---|
| double infinitive |
Good to know
Do not use würde in a wish about the past: a sentence like Wenn ich das nur gewusst hätte! is correct, but Wenn ich das nur wissen würde! shifts the meaning to the present. Also, when a modal verb appears in a past wish, both infinitives stand at the end and the auxiliary hätte moves in front of them: Wenn ich nur hätte helfen können! (not gekonnt).
