Deutsch — Stative passive (Zustandspassiv)
The stative passive is formed with sein + past participle and describes the result of an action, e.g. Die Tür ist geöffnet. The process passive with werden (Die Tür wird geöffnet) describes the action while it happens.
How it works
Use werden + past participle for the action itself (Vorgangspassiv): Das Fenster wird geöffnet — someone is opening it right now. Use sein + past participle for the resulting state (Zustandspassiv): Das Fenster ist geöffnet — it now stands open. Both use the same participle; only the auxiliary (werden vs. sein) changes the meaning.

Good to know
In the past tense the stative passive uses war, not wurde: Die Tür war geöffnet (it was in an open state) vs. Die Tür wurde geöffnet (the opening happened). Only telic, result-bearing verbs form a stative passive; verbs without a clear resulting state (e.g. loben) sound odd as *ist gelobt.
